Daisy's Favorites Cake Recipe

Last week, we had a bit of a scare when we came home and saw she had eaten almost an entire pack of Orbit gum. In case you don't know, one of the ingredients in sugar-free gum is xylitol (a sugar alcohol) which is extremely deadly to dogs. Their liver can't process it properly and it sends them into extremely low blood sugar and can cause liver damage. We immediately induced vomiting* with hydrogen peroxide and rushed her off to the emergency vet. She stayed there overnight and then at our regular vet all the next day. Luckily, Orbit is one of the lower dosed gums, with Trident being the worst, and she didn't have any problems.

The sweetly deceptive face of a troublemaker.

Anyway, even though it was her fault for misbehaving and costing us $700 (YIKES), I felt terrible that she had to stay at the vet and get pricked on every few hours. So, I made her a cake before she came home. Some of her favorite foods include peanut butter (duh), bananas, carrots, and apples. She would seriously devour a bowl of baby carrots if I let her. This recipe uses all of her favorites with just a few extra ingredients. I made mine in a big ramekin but a smaller one might work better and make it more cupcake shaped. She went nuts over this cake so I think it's safe to say it's a hit.

Daisy's Favorites Cake

Makes 1 cake - large dog sized, sharing size for medium to small dogs.

1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
3 Tbsp. creamy peanut butter
1 medium banana, mashed
½ medium apple, finely chopped
5 baby carrots, finely chopped
2 - 3 Tbsp. flour (if needed)

Preheat oven at 350ยบ. Mix all ingredients well. Batter should be slightly thicker than normal cake batter. If the batter seems too wet, add flour one tablespoon at a time. Pour batter into ramekin and bake for 20 minutes, checking center with toothpick. If desired, frost with creamy peanut butter.

If you make this and your dog loves it (or hates it) let me know!

*Inducing vomiting is something every dog and cat owner should know how to do. We all know how they get into things and think the best way to dispose of them is in their stomach's. Check here to read more about it and how much hydrogen peroxide to give. It really can save their life. We just put the right amount in a shot glass, and while one person holds her head steady and mouth open, the other dumps it down her throat.

May Wishlist

Maybe it's because Mad Men is back, but I've really been digging tribal prints in bright, saturated colors and lots of metallics. I've got 1968 on my mind! I can totally see Megan Draper wearing these things if she were a modern woman.

Mental Health Diary: Selective Eating Disorder

Since my post on my depression and anxiety went over so well, I thought I'd open up about a few of my other issues. I've been a picky eater my whole life. Anyone who has ever shared a meal with me knows about my aversions to foods and the lengths I will go to to avoid eating things that aren't on my "ok foods list". Not that I have an actual list. I have what is called Selective Eating Disorder which is basically a picky eating adult. It's a mental illness just like anorexia or bulimia but instead of stemming from body image issues, it stems from having issues with the food itself. Sometimes, it's an issue with the food's texture (like melted cheese on pizza, which makes me gag) and other times it the actual flavor of the food (like green onions, which are just disgusting).

People with SED tend to count out whole food groups, such as fruit or vegetables, from their diets based on these things. I love almost all fruit and will eat most vegetables. I do however have to have vegetables prepared in a certain way, like broccoli, which has to be cooked and never raw. SED sufferers are also very repetitive in their eating and sometimes eat the same meal everyday for weeks, even months. Just look at Anderson Cooper and his daily lunch of turkey and cornbread from Boston Market. If I lived alone, I'm pretty sure I could be the same way.

My husband, who is much more adventurous with eating,  asked me to come up with 5 new meals we can make for dinner because he's sick of eating the same things all the time. For most people, this is a piece of cake but for me, it's the start of an anxiety attack. I've resigned myself to the fact that almost every meal with have something in it that I don't like and will have to pick out. I love fried rice, but I hate the egg and vegetables mixed in. Even with accepting this, it makes finding new meals very difficult. A lot of times I find if I omit the offending texture from the food, it changes the flavor, which I like. So, I soldier on and pick through things. Casseroles and meatloaf however... forget it.

I have opened myself up to some new foods in the past few years. I will now eat guacamole (although, not the onion chunks), twice baked potatoes (minus the green onion), fried eggs, and I've discovered I really love kung pao chicken (I pick around the peanuts). While that might not sound like much of a victory to you since I'm still picking through things, it's HUGE for me. I would have never touched sauce covered chicken 5 years ago. I am stuck in a rut over some things, however. I still pull all the cheese and sauce off my pizza only to put minuscule amounts back on and I don't eat the chunks in queso. Every time I go to a Mexican restaurant, I order the same thing: refried beans and flour tortillas and I never ever put condiments on hamburgers or sandwiches.

Things I have major issues with:
thick, melted cheese (like on pizza or in mozzarella sticks) It makes me gag.
raw broccoli
coffee
ground beef mixed in things
sausage
mushrooms
seafood

Things that I love but shouldn't in theory:
fried okra and fried pickles
black olives (not in stuff though)
jicama
dill pickles
tomatoes
strong unsweetened tea

I read a horrible blog post about someone mocking Anderson Cooper for his pickiness basically telling him he needed to grow-up and get over it. If only it were that easy. Like any mental health issue, it's in your head and you can't just walk out of that jail cell. It's not that we are just adults stuck in a phase of being difficult about the foods we can eat. Most of us are desperate to be able to go in to a restaurant and eat anything off the menu. It's a source of shame, anxiety, and major frustration. If you know someone who is an adult picky eater, ridiculing them or constantly pointing out their pickiness is just about the worst thing you can do. Trust me, they know and they hate it. Also, if they do have a victory of eating something new and enjoying it, acknowledge that it was a big deal for them. It often seems like all the focus is on what we won't eat and not what we have overcome our aversions to eating.

So, if you invite me over to your house for dinner, please know that I was raised to be polite and will eat almost whatever you make. I will probably be picking through it though. Don't take offense to this as it's not your cooking, just my brain.

April Wishlist

Can you tell I'm feeling color and patterns for spring? Since I wear the same thing everyday for work (red polo and black or khaki pants), I'm really wanting to mix it up when I'm off duty. I'm especially loving that swimsuit! It's doubtful I'll actually get any of this, but a girl can dream, right?

The Doctor Returns!

Happy Doctor Who Day! If somehow you have no idea what doctor who is, scroll to the bottom and I'll clue you in to the most amazing thing ever. After a long three month wait, we can resume season 7 and find out what the deal with Clara is. I would complain about how the wait for this season to begin and then start back up has been torturous, but compared to the wait for Sherlock, this has been cake.

See me up there looking all cozy with a dalek? That was taken at Dallas Comic Con last October. Being Oswin was so much fun and I might have freaked out a bit when I saw the dalek. What can I say? I'm a nerd and I wear my obsessive love for things on my sleeve.

In other Who news, I just saw this on Facebook and I have to share... David Tennant and Billie Piper are returning for the 50th anniversary special! How freaking amazing is that? As a Ten/Rose shipper for life, I am super pumped and I hope there is some romance between them. No telling how Moffat will pull off the multiple Doctors at once and Rose being in parallel universe thing. I'm trusting his genius to keep me happily entertained. While Matt Smith is totally my doctor, I'm looking forward to seeing Ten again.

So, you don't know what the hell I'm talking about? Doctor Who is a British sci-fi show that started in 1963 and is still running today. It took a brief hiatus, had a movie, and then picked back up. How is this possible you say? The star of the show is the Doctor (note, his name is the Doctor, not Doctor Who) who is from the alien race of Time Lords. They have the ability to regenerate when near death which is a handy thing when you have a show running for 50 years. We are currently on the Eleventh regeneration/actor. The Doctor travels around space and time in his TARDIS (that blue police box you've seen all over the internet) with companions he picks up along the way. The show follows all of his adventures which usually deal with aliens and saving the day. Because he can travel in time though, there is a lot of mind-bending crossing of paths by different characters. Whovians like to make their brains melt.

Should you want to start watching the show, you have some options. You can start from the very beginning with the First Doctor or you can start with the 2005 episodes with the Ninth Doctor OR you can start at series* five with the Eleventh Doctor. I started with Nine and think that's the best route to go. It gives you a good history of what you've not seen and lays the foundation for things to come in later seasons. Most of Doctor Who is available on Netflix Instant so it's super easy to access.

In the UK, they call seasons series. Which makes things a bit confusing for Americans.

Easter Cupcakes

As someone with little to no self-control when it comes to eating, cupcakes are definitely dangerous to have around the house. I try to only make them for my birthday but I couldn't resist the yellow frosting with sprinkles at the grocery store. So, I decided that I was making them for Easter. That's a legit excuse, right? Instead of boring white cake mix, I went with strawberry. I love how springy they turned out! The husband said I shouldn't have done sprinkles on them but he doesn't know what he's talking about. Sprinkles belong on everything. DUH!

I also just realized that the frosted cupcakes match the mixer and batter. I've always had a thing for pink and yellow.

Liebster Award Nomination

Woohoo! I was nominated for a Liebster Award by Jess of Milky Robot. I feel so honored to be thought of!

What is this, you ask?  Merely an award given to bloggers, by bloggers who admire others' work, and want to encourage readership to smaller blogs, who deserve more followers.  I am so grateful and honored to be involved.  Basically, I answer eleven questions given to me by Jess, and then I come up with eleven random facts about myself, and then I nominate others to receive the award.

1. What's your favorite place to eat?

I have a bad addiction to Taco Bell. I know, it's horrible but I just crave tostadas an the Doritos tacos. I also love Panda Express!

2. If you could pick, what would be your dream job?

I would absolutely love to own a vintage shop. Fashion is a serious interest of mine and I've been obsessed with vintage clothing since high school. I'd also like to own a yarn shop! Maybe 2 in 1? ;)

3. Who or what inspired you to get into blogging?

I'm a rather talkative and loud individual and I always feel like sharing my opinion. While there are tons of bloggers out there, I still wanted to have my little corner of the internet.

4. How would you describe your perfect day?

Hanging out with my bestie, Wendy, and thrift shopping, eating, and playing with dolls. You know, all the fun stuff!

5. Who is your biggest inspiration?

My parents. They are 23 years apart in age yet I cannot think of two people more suited to the term soulmates. They have been through so much and yet have stood strong by each other's side no matter the storm. I feel truly blessed to have them as my parents.

6. If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it?

Buy my parents a house, take a nice vacation, donate some to charity, and save the rest!

7. What's the craziest thing you've ever done?

I'm a pretty tame person so the craziest thing would probably be trying to pierce my own belly button when I was 13. Needless to say, that didn't turn out good.

8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Paris! I've never been but I have a fantasy of living there with my juliet balcony full of plants.

9. What was your favorite thing as a kid?

I loved playing dress-up. My grandma had a ton of old clothes that we would play in. My favorite was playing "school teacher" where I had the big floor length black skirt with a white petticoat and white blouse buttoned all the way up.

10. What's your biggest pet peeve?

People who are inconsiderate of others. It takes two seconds to say "thank you" to someone holding open the door!

11. How has blogging changed your life?

It's still pretty new so the change hasn't been huge, but I love having a place to dump all my outfit ideas and random crafts
